Description of No Greater Glory: The American Civil War
Revolution '76 and No Greater Glory are grand wargames covering the entire U.S. Civil War. You choose to be either Lincoln or Davis and you must deal with politics, cabinet choices, internal bickering, appointments and firings of generals and of course.the conduct of the actual war itself!
Both games are designed by Ed Bever, longtime Sid Meier collaborator and himself a veteran wargamer. Highly recommended!

I would love to see the game manual if anyone has it. Is it posted somewhere online?
If not I would love an emailed copy ([email protected]). I can't find it anywhere. This is one of the best strategy games every made btw.

Never mind, I figured out the executable. I do have the manual from about 20 years ago if anyone is curious as to any minutia. The play page for this abandonware site has it.

A few suggestions for winning the DOS game as the Union
1) I like to give an extra appointment to the border states with the initial cabinet and diplomatic picks (and stiff New England) that helps you when you really need border state support & support is high enough in New England you can afford it 2) that puts it in play to have a possible successful revolt in Grafton in mid-1861, which helps speed up control of the rivers 3) try to hold Norfolk if possible & then take Wilmington & strangle Richmond, which should fall by the end of 1862 4) go ahead and grab Louisville, screw Kentucky's neutrality, holding the region benefits you more than that hurts 5) start partially ending slavery by the end of 1861, it kills foreign support for the CSA and is politically beneficial throughout the north

To win the game(as the Union):
-pay attention to political favor, keep your top 5 prestige generals leading 5 biggest forces, take a marginal approach to implementing taxes, conscription and changes to slavery. If your political standing falters, cities will riot and kill your recruiting and lead to Lincoln being defeated which will end your game by end of 1864. -gain full control of the river system, this will allow you to move supplies and troops from east to west w/o using up rail or naval. Also keep troops fully supplied or risk massive desertion. -feign attacks on cities to pin their troops there and prevent them from attacking weaker forces, sacrifice The Valley early on so the confederates cant amass troops and supplies in Richmond/N Virginia. They will be spread too thin if you take Grafton and sacrifice Valley, begin to encircle Richmond, cutting off reinforcements and conduct plunder attacks on them to decimate their economy. You should be able to take Richmond this way by mid 1863, shoring up your political standing and likely lead to England cutting off aid. After this, your forces will likely outnumber them 2 or 3-1 and systematically work your way towards major southern cities.

Chris,
It sounds like you re playing with the CSA with limited intel if you are seeing 400k troops by 1862. Limited intel shows inaccurate troop numbers. Switch to full intel, or ignore the numbers and do your best to make estimations.

The game is not impossible to beat as CSA with limited intell and historical difficulty. I can win (with CSA) about half the me on those settings.

The game is literally broke. Doesn't matter who I play the other side have 400k troops by 1862. It's just broken I don't know what else to say. Any suggestions?

Its possible to beat the game on those settings.. just difficult and requires a little luck. If you still play/read this, leave a message and i'll be happy to send some tips.

how do you start it?

also:
p6, peace p39, economy This game is strictly impossible to beat as CSA, using random leaders, limited intell, historical difficulty. I've tried at least two dozen times and always run into disaster in 1862. :)
